Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson
Thousands are trampling each other to get near him. He speaks first to the disciples, not to the crowd.
Where this sits
This follows the meal and the woes. The crowd is swelling. He turns to the ones who will live under the pressure.
Hypocrisy
The leaven of the Pharisees is hypocrisy. A little of it works through the whole. It is religion shaped by the fear of people: a public face that does not match the inner room. Nothing covered stays covered. What is whispered will be proclaimed. A double life is not a strategy.
Fear
The ones who can kill the body are not the ones to fear. They can do nothing after that. Fear the one who has authority beyond death. Then he steadies them. Sparrows are not forgotten. The hairs of the head are counted. They are not overlooked.
What to take
The disciples are about to live under threat, and under the temptation to perform. Fear God. Believe you are known. Do not live for the crowd.
