Gospel

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 12:49–53

I have come to cast a fire upon the earth. And what should I desire, except that it may be kindled? And I have a baptism, with which I am to be baptized. And how I am constrained, even until it may be accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but division. For from this time on, there will be five in one house: divided as three against two, and as two against three. A father will be divided against a son, and a son against his father; a mother against a daughter and a daughter against a mother; a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

He came to cast fire on the earth, and he wishes it were already kindled. He has a baptism to undergo, and he is constrained until it is done. He did not come to hand out a surface peace.

Where this sits

The crowd has wanted a useful Jesus. He names the cost of the real one.

Division

His mission divides before it heals. Households will split over him. This is not a mood. It is what a claim this large does to old loyalties. The fire is judgment and purification. The baptism is his death.

What to take

Do not call the split a failure of his mission. It is the mission meeting a real answer.
