Verse of the day

Gospel

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 13:18–21

So he said: “To what is the kingdom of God similar, and to what figure shall I compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden. And it grew, and it became a great tree, and the birds of the air rested in its branches.” And again, he said: “To what figure shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of fine wheat flour, until it was entirely leavened.”

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

Right after the bent woman stands up, he says the kingdom is like a mustard seed and like leaven.

Where this sits

One quiet healing has just happened in a hostile room. He will not let them measure the kingdom by that room.

Scale

It begins below notice and ends by sheltering what it did not look able to hold. The leaven works hidden, through the lump, not on top of it.

What to take

Do not measure the kingdom by the size of the start. Trust a beginning you cannot yet see finished.
