Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 14:1–6

It happened that, when Jesus entered the house of a certain leader of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were observing him. And behold, a certain man before him was afflicted with edema. And responding, Jesus spoke to the experts in the law and to the Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath?” But they kept silent. Yet truly, taking hold of him, he healed him and sent him away. And responding to them, he said, “Which of you will have a donkey or an ox fall into a pit, and will not promptly pull him out, on the day of the Sabbath?” And they were unable to respond to him about these things.

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

He is dining at a leading Pharisee's house on the Sabbath, and they are watching him. A man with dropsy is there. He asks if healing is lawful. They are silent. He heals the man.

Where this sits

This opens a series of teachings at a watched table.

Silence is evasion

Either answer costs them, so they keep quiet. Silence here is not openness. He acts anyway. A person in need is not a case waiting for their ruling.

What to take

Watching Jesus is not the same as answering him.
