Week 31 of Ordinary Time

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed

Monday, November 2, 2026

Gospel for November 2, 2026.

Verse of the day

About today

All Souls’ Day follows All Saints as mercy follows glory. The Church prays for the dead, that they may be purified in the love of God and come to the vision of his face. This is not a denial of the Resurrection; it is charity that still has something to do for those we love. The Church does not forget her dead. Ask today for the faithful departed by name if you can, and for a hope that buries the dead as those who will rise.

Gospel

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

John 6:37–40

All that the Father gives to me shall come to me. And whoever comes to me, I will not cast out. For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day. So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

All Souls reads a short word from the bread discourse. Everyone the Father gives him will come to him, and the one who comes he will not cast out. The will of the Father is that he lose nothing of what was given, and raise it on the last day.

Where this sits

The Church is praying for the dead. The Gospel chosen is not a funeral speech. It is his own account of what he came to do with those the Father gave him.

Not lost

Coming to him is not a risk. He will not cast out the one who comes. The Father's will is that he lose nothing. The resurrection on the last day is not an extra. It is the completion of that will.

What to take

Prayer for the dead rests on this. He does not lose what the Father gave him. The last day is the day he raises them.
