Week 32 of Ordinary Time

Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

Monday, November 9, 2026

Gospel for November 9, 2026.

Verse of the day

About today

The Lateran basilica is the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, “mother and head of all the churches.” Its dedication, kept on 9 November, is a feast of the Church herself: a people built of living stones, not only of marble, bound to the chair of Peter. Every parish altar is kin to that one. Ask today for love of the local church and of the church in Rome, and for a holiness that makes of us a dwelling place for God in the Spirit.

John 2:13–22

The Passover of the Jews was near, and so Jesus ascended to Jerusalem. And he found, sitting in the temple, sellers of oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers. And when he had made something like a whip out of little cords, he drove them all out of the temple, including the sheep and the oxen. And he poured out the brass coins of the moneychangers, and he overturned their tables. And to those who were selling doves, he said: “Take these things out of here, and do not make my Father’s house into a house of commerce.” And truly, his disciples were reminded that it is written: “Zeal for your house consumes me.” Then the Jews responded and said to him, “What sign can you show to us, that you may do these things?” Jesus responded and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” Then the Jews said, “This temple has been built up over forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” Yet he was speaking about the Temple of his body. Therefore, when he had resurrected from the dead, his disciples were reminded that he had said this, and they believed in the Scriptures and in the word that Jesus had spoken.

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

The feast of the Dedication of the Lateran reads the cleansing of the temple. He finds sellers and money-changers, makes a whip, drives them out, and says do not make my Father's house a house of trade. They ask for a sign. He says destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it. He was speaking of his body.

Where this sits

The Lateran is the cathedral of Rome, the mother church. The Gospel chosen is not a building dedication. It is his claim on the temple, and the word that his body is the temple.

The house

Trade in the courts had made the place of prayer a market. He clears it. The sign they demand is his death and rising. The temple that matters is not the stone one. After he is raised, the disciples remember and believe.

What to take

The feast of a church is the feast of his body. A house of prayer that has become a market is under his whip. The sign is the resurrection, not a new building.
