Verse of the day

Gospel

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 19:41–44

When he drew near, seeing the city, he wept over it, saying: “If only you had known, indeed even in this your day, which things are for your peace. But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the days will overtake you. And your enemies will encircle you with a valley. And they will surround you and hem you in on every side. And they will knock you down to the ground, with your sons who are in you. And they will not leave stone upon stone within you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

As he draws near and sees the city, he weeps. If you had known on this day the things that make for peace. Now they are hidden from your eyes. The days will come when enemies surround you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.

Where this sits

This is the approach to Jerusalem. The triumphal entry has just happened. The next scene is the temple.

The visitation

The tears are not for a future he cannot stop. They are for a city that did not recognize its day. Peace was offered and not known. The siege he names is the result of a missed visit, not a random disaster.

What to take

He weeps over refusal. The danger is not only hostility. It is not knowing the day you are being visited.
