Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 19:45–48

Entering into the temple, he began to cast out those who sold in it, and those who bought, saying to them: “It is written: ‘My house is a house of prayer.’ But you have made it into a den of robbers.” And he was teaching in the temple daily. And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the leaders of the people were seeking to destroy him. But they could not find what to do to him. For all the people were listening to him attentively.

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

He enters the temple and drives out those who sold. My house shall be a house of prayer. You have made it a den of robbers. He teaches daily. The chief priests and scribes seek to destroy him, and cannot, because the people hang on his words.

Where this sits

This is the first act inside Jerusalem. The weeping was yesterday's approach. This is the claim on the house.

The house

Prayer is what the house is for. Trade has made it a den. He clears it and then occupies it by teaching. The leaders want him dead and cannot yet act, because the people are listening.

What to take

A house of prayer that has become a market is under his clearing. The word they hang on is the same word the leaders want to kill.
