Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 21:12–19

Before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, handing you over to synagogues and into custody, dragging you before kings and governors, because of my name. And this will be an opportunity for you to give testimony. Therefore, set this in your hearts: that you should not consider in advance how you might respond. For I will give to you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist or contradict. And you will be handed over by your parents, and brothers, and relatives, and friends. And they will bring about the death of some of you. And you will be hated by all because of my name. And yet, not a hair of your head will perish. By your patience, you shall possess your souls.

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

Before all this they will lay hands on you and persecute you, delivering you to synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings for my name's sake. This will be your opportunity to bear witness. Do not meditate beforehand how to answer. I will give you a mouth and wisdom. You will be delivered up by parents and brothers. Some of you they will put to death. Not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.

Where this sits

This continues the temple discourse. The persecution comes before the end, and it is the witness.

The opportunity

Arrest is not only a loss. He calls it the chance to bear witness. The words will be given. Betrayal will come from inside the house. The promise about the hair sits beside the word that some will be killed. Endurance, not escape, is how the life is gained.

What to take

Do not prepare a speech for the day they take you. Endure. The life is gained by staying, not by getting out.
