Verse of the day

Gospel

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Luke 21:29–33

He told them a comparison: “Take notice of the fig tree and of all the trees. When presently they produce fruit from themselves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you will have seen these things happen, know that the kingdom of God is near. Amen I say to you, this lineage shall not pass away, until all these things happen. Heaven and earth shall pass away. But my words shall not pass away.

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they put out leaves, you know summer is near. So when you see these things, the kingdom of God is near. This generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away. My words will not.

Where this sits

This is the reading of the signs, after the discourse on the end.

The leaves

The signs are as readable as a tree. The kingdom is near when these things happen. The generation word is the hard one. He ties the events to the generation that hears him. The last line is the ground under all of it. His words outlast heaven and earth.

What to take

Learn to read the time. And hold the word that does not pass away, even when the world does.
