Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson
Watch yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. It will come upon all who dwell on the face of the earth. Stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things and to stand before the Son of Man.
Where this sits
This is the last warning of the discourse, before the nights on the Mount of Olives.
The weight
The danger is not only persecution. It is a heart made heavy by pleasure and by ordinary care. The day comes like a trap on a weighed-down heart. The answer is not anxiety. It is staying awake and praying for strength to stand.
What to take
The cares of this life can make you miss the day as surely as drunkenness can. Pray for the strength to stand before him.
