Mark 13:33–37

Take heed, be vigilant, and pray. For you do not know when the time may be. It is like a man who, setting out on a sojourn, left behind his house, and gave his servants authority over every work, and instructed the doorkeeper to stand watch. Therefore, be vigilant, for you do not know when the lord of the house may arrive: in the evening, or in the middle of the night, or at first light, or in the morning. Otherwise, when he will have arrived unexpectedly, he may find you sleeping. But what I say to you, I say to all: Be vigilant.”

Prayer on Fire Gospel Lesson

The first Sunday of Advent reads the end of Mark's discourse. Be on guard. Stay awake. You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, who puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. You do not know when the master comes, evening or midnight or cockcrow or morning. What I say to you I say to all. Stay awake.

Where this sits

Advent begins here. The year turns toward his coming by hearing the command to watch.

The door

Each servant has work. The doorkeeper has one job: stay awake. The hour is unknown on purpose. Watching is not a mood for the last week. It is the posture of the whole wait. He says it to all, not only to the Twelve.

What to take

Advent is not a countdown you can calculate. It is staying awake at the door, with your work in hand.
