Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tuesday, December 8, 2026

Today’s verse

About today

The Church believes that Mary, from the first moment of her conception, was preserved from original sin by the merits of her Son. The solemnity on 8 December, patronal feast of the United States, is not about her apart from Christ: it is grace beforehand, the first work of the Redeemer in the one who would say yes. Prepared, she is still the handmaid. Ask today for a clean heart, and for a nation placed under her protection to become more worthy of it.

Scripture

Mass – Second Reading

Ephesians 1:3–6, 11–12

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ, just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, so that we would be holy and immaculate in his sight, in charity. He has predestined us to adoption as sons, through Jesus Christ, in himself, according to the purpose of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace, with which he has gifted us in his beloved Son. In him, we too are called to our portion, having been predestined in accord with the plan of the One who accomplishes all things by the counsel of his will. So may we be, to the praise of his glory, we who have hoped beforehand in Christ.
