Opening
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Hymn
Now thank we all our God, With heart, and hands, and voices, Who wondrous things hath done, In Whom His world rejoices;
Martin Rinkart, translated by Catherine Winkworth (Rinkart 1586–1649; Winkworth 1827–1878); first published 1858. Public domain.
The reading
Pause in the middle of the day. Read slowly, as if someone were speaking to you.
No Gospel is published for this date.
Hebrews 12:1–6
Furthermore, since we also have so great a cloud of witnesses over us, let us set aside every burden and sin which may surround us, and advance, through patience, to the struggle offered to us. Let us gaze upon Jesus, as the Author and the completion of our faith, who, having joy laid out before him, endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and who now sits at the right hand of the throne of God. So then, meditate upon him who endured such adversity from sinners against himself, so that you may not become weary, failing in your souls. For you have not yet resisted unto blood, while striving against sin. And you have forgotten the consolation which speaks to you like sons, saying: “My son, do not be willing to neglect the discipline of the Lord. Neither should you become weary, while being rebuked by him.” For whomever the Lord loves, he chastises. And every son whom he accepts, he scourges.

Which word seems to linger?
What would you like to tell Jesus?
Silence
Rest here for a minute. Let the reading settle.
Psalm
Psalm 119 (118):103
Ant. Let your word be my bread at midday, Lord Jesus.
How sweet is your eloquence to my palate, more so than honey to my mouth!
Ant. Let your word be my bread at midday, Lord Jesus.
Today’s lesson from Jesus
Blessed are the persecuted for the sake of justice
Blessed are those who endure persecution for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they have slandered you, and persecuted you, and spoken all kinds of evil against you, falsely, for my sake: be glad and exult, for your reward in heaven is plentiful. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:10–12

Bless the hidden work of this noon — unpaid, unnoticed, still offered — and let it be enough.

Closing
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Holy Spirit, cool what burns in us: anger, hurry, and fear. Leave us with a steady heart. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
