Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun Does his successive journeys run; His kingdom spread from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

Isaac Watts (1674–1748); first published 1719. Public domain.

The reading

Pause in the middle of the day. Read slowly, as if someone were speaking to you.

No Gospel is published for this date.

John 10:11–16

I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd gives his life for his sheep. But the hired hand, and whoever is not a shepherd, to whom the sheep do not belong, he sees the wolf approaching, and he departs from the sheep and flees. And the wolf ravages and scatters the sheep. And the hired hand flees, because he is a hired hand and there is no concern for the sheep within him. I am the good Shepherd, and I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for my sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold, and I must lead them. They shall hear my voice, and there shall be one sheepfold and one shepherd.

Reflection

Is there a word or picture you would like to keep with you?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Rest here for a minute. Let the reading settle.

Psalm

Psalm 119 (118):114

Ant. Be my support in the long afternoon, Lord. I hope in what you have said.

You are my helper and my supporter. And in your word, I have greatly hoped.

Ant. Be my support in the long afternoon, Lord. I hope in what you have said.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

The lost sheep

Now tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to him, so that they might listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, “This one accepts sinners and eats with them.” And he told this parable to them, saying: “What man among you, who has one hundred sheep, and if he will have lost one of them, would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the one whom he had lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he places it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And returning home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them: ‘Congratulate me! For I have found my sheep, which had been lost.’ I say to you, that there will be so much more joy in heaven over one sinner repenting, than over the ninety-nine just, who do not need to repent.

Where we are weary, give strength; where we are hurried, give presence; where we have failed in love, give us a way to begin again.

  3. Prayer on Fire intention

For those who have no work today, or work that does not pay enough, give them dignity and open a door.

    R. Speak, Lord, we are listening.

Closing

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Lord, bless the hidden work of this noon. You see in secret; that is enough. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
