Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Praise to the Holiest in the height, And in the depth be praise: In all His words most wonderful; Most sure in all His ways!

John Henry Newman (1801–1890); first published 1865. Public domain.

The reading

Pause in the middle of the day. Read slowly, as if someone were speaking to you.

No Gospel is published for this date.

Romans 5:1–5

Therefore, having been justified by faith, let us be at peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ. For through him we also have access by faith to this grace, in which we stand firm, and to glory, in the hope of the glory of the sons of God. And not only that, but we also find glory in tribulation, knowing that tribulation exercises patience, and patience leads to proving, yet truly proving leads to hope, but hope is not unfounded, because the love of God is poured forth in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Reflection

What did you notice as you listened?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Rest here for a minute. Let the reading settle.

Psalm

Psalm 34 (33):2

Ant. Not only in church, Lord. Here, in the middle of the work, let me praise you.

I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will be ever in my mouth.

Ant. Not only in church, Lord. Here, in the middle of the work, let me praise you.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

Love your enemies

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and you shall have hatred for your enemy.’ But I say to you: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. And pray for those who persecute and slander you. In this way, you shall be sons of your Father, who is in heaven. He causes his sun to rise upon the good and the bad, and he causes it to rain upon the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not even tax collectors behave this way? And if you greet only your brothers, what more have you done? Do not even the pagans behave this way? Therefore, be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Matthew 5:43–48

Intentions

Add your own personal intentions

  1. Shared by the community

For Mary and Dewey as they begin their life together, may the Holy Spirit be with them and help grow their love for one another through Holy Matrimony.

    R. Lord, have mercy.

  2. Prayer on Fire intention

Bless the hidden work of this noon — unpaid, unnoticed, still offered — and let it be enough.

    R. Lord, have mercy.

  3. Prayer on Fire intention

For those who hunger at midday, and for us who eat — make us just, grateful, and unwilling to hurry past need.

    R. Lord, have mercy.

Closing

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

God of patience, you wait for us longer than we wait for anything. Make us patient with the people who try us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
