Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest, Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

Greek evening hymn (3rd century or earlier), translated by John Keble (Keble 1792–1866); first published 1861. Public domain.

The reading

Set the day down. Let this reading be the last word you hear before you rest.

Matthew 8:23–27

And climbing into a boat, his disciples followed him. And behold, a great tempest occurred in the sea, so much so that the boat was covered with waves; yet truly, he was sleeping. And his disciples drew near to him, and they awakened him, saying: “Lord, save us, we are perishing.” And Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid, O little in faith?” Then rising up, he commanded the winds, and the sea. And a great tranquility occurred. Moreover, the men wondered, saying: “What kind of man is this? For even the winds and the sea obey him.”

Reflection

Is there a word or picture you would like to keep with you?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Be quiet for a minute. Let Jesus have the last of the day.

Psalm

Psalm 91 (90):11

Ant. Send your angels to those who sleep alone tonight, Lord, and to those who cannot sleep.

For he has given his Angels charge over you, so as to preserve you in all your ways.

Ant. Send your angels to those who sleep alone tonight, Lord, and to those who cannot sleep.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

The mustard seed

And he said: “To what should we compare the kingdom of God? Or to what parable should we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed which, when it has been sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds which are in the earth. And when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all the plants, and it produces great branches, so much so that the birds of the air are able to live under its shadow.”

Mark 4:30–32
