Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured Who is the immortal Father, heavenly, blest, Holiest of Holies, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

Greek evening hymn (3rd century or earlier), translated by John Keble (Keble 1792–1866); first published 1861. Public domain.

The reading

Set the day down. Let this reading be the last word you hear before you rest.

No Gospel is published for this date.

1 Peter 5:5–10

Similarly, young persons, be subject to the elders. And infuse all humility among one another, for God resists the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace. And so, be humbled under the powerful hand of God, so that he may exalt you in the time of visitation. Cast all your cares upon him, for he takes care of you. Be sober and vigilant. For your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion, traveling around and seeking those whom he might devour. Resist him by being strong in faith, being aware that the same passions afflict those who are your brothers in the world. But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself perfect, confirm, and establish us, after a brief time of suffering.

Reflection

Is there a word or picture you would like to keep with you?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Be quiet for a minute. Let Jesus have the last of the day.

Psalm

Psalm 16 (15):9

Ant. Let my body rest, Lord, and let my hope stay awake in you.

Because of this, my heart has been joyful, and my tongue has exulted. Moreover, even my body will rest in hope.

Ant. Let my body rest, Lord, and let my hope stay awake in you.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

Blessed are the meek

Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth.

Matthew 5:4

Where do these words meet your day?

Intentions

Add your own personal intentions

  1. Shared by the community

For Mary and Dewey as they prepare for their upcoming wedding, may the Holy Spirit be with them and help grow their love for one another through Holy Matrimony.

    R. Speak, Lord, we are listening.

  2. Prayer on Fire intention

For those held by an addiction, a shame, or a temptation tonight, be stronger than what grips them, and keep us from judging them.

    R. Speak, Lord, we are listening.

  3. Prayer on Fire intention

Teach us to lie down as children of the Father who does not slumber. Guard our sleeping and our waking.

    R. Speak, Lord, we are listening.

Closing

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lord Jesus, we have heard your word once more before we sleep. Keep it alive in us through the night, as a seed keeps in the dark. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
