Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home!

Isaac Watts (1674–1748); first published 1719. Public domain.

The reading

Set the day down. Let this reading be the last word you hear before you rest.

No Gospel is published for this date.

Isaiah 49:14–16

And Zion said: “The Lord has abandoned me, and the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to take pity on the child of her womb? But even if she would forget, still I shall never forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on my hands. Your walls are always before my eyes.

Reflection

Which word seems to linger?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Be quiet for a minute. Let Jesus have the last of the day.

Psalm

Psalm 34 (33):19

Ant. Come close to everyone who is hurting tonight, Lord, and to me.

The Lord is near to those who are troubled in heart, and he will save the humble in spirit.

Ant. Come close to everyone who is hurting tonight, Lord, and to me.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

The Father and his two sons

And returning to his senses, he said: ‘How many hired hands in my father’s house have abundant bread, while I perish here in famine! I shall rise up and go to my father, and I will say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am not worthy to be called your son. Make me one of your hired hands.’ And rising up, he went to his father. But while he was still at a distance, his father saw him, and he was moved with compassion, and running to him, he fell upon his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him: ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. Now I am not worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants: ‘Quickly! Bring out the best robe, and clothe him with it. And put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here, and kill it. And let us eat and hold a feast. For this son of mine was dead, and has revived; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to feast.

Luke 15:17–24
