Hymn
Our God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home!
Isaac Watts (1674–1748); first published 1719. Public domain.
The reading
Set the day down. Let this reading be the last word you hear before you rest.
No Gospel is published for this date.
Luke 23:44–49
Now it was nearly the sixth hour, and a darkness occurred over the entire earth, until the ninth hour. And the sun was obscured. And the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” And upon saying this, he expired. Now, the centurion, seeing what had happened, glorified God, saying, “Truly, this man was the Just One.” And the entire crowd of those who came together to see this spectacle also saw what had happened, and they returned, striking their breasts. Now all those who knew him, and the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, watching these things.
Reflection
Which word seems to linger?
What would you like to tell Jesus?
Silence
Be quiet for a minute. Let Jesus have the last of the day.
Psalm
Psalm 139 (138):12
Ant. No dark is dark to you, Lord. Be my light as I close my eyes.
But darkness will not be impenetrable to you, and night will illuminate like the day: for just as its darkness is, so also is its light.
Ant. No dark is dark to you, Lord. Be my light as I close my eyes.
Today’s lesson from Jesus
Whatever you did for the least of these
Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ Then the just will answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when have we seen you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink? And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?’ And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’
Matthew 25:34–40

Closing
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
God of mercy, forgive us as we forgive. Let no one we have wronged, and no one who has wronged us, be a stranger to our prayer tonight. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
