Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

When morning gilds the skies, My heart awaking cries, May Jesus Christ be praised!

Anonymous German hymn (c. 1828), translated by Edward Caswall (Caswall 1814–1878); first published 1853. Public domain.

The reading

Be still for a moment, and let the day wait. Listen for what Jesus wants to say to you first.

No Gospel is published for this date.

Ephesians 5:8–14

For you were darkness, in times past, but now you are light, in the Lord. So then, walk as sons of the light. For the fruit of the light is in all goodness and justice and truth, affirming what is well-pleasing to God. And so, have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead, refute them. For the things that are done by them in secret are shameful, even to mention. But all things that are disputed are made manifest by the light. For all that is made manifest is light. Because of this, it is said: “You who are sleeping: awaken, and rise up from the dead, and so shall the Christ enlighten you.”

Reflection

Which word seems to linger?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Be still for a minute. You do not have to say anything.

Psalm

Psalm 118 (117):24

Ant. This day is a gift from your hand. Teach me to receive it, Lord.

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us exult and rejoice in it.

Ant. This day is a gift from your hand. Teach me to receive it, Lord.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

Love your enemies

You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and you shall have hatred for your enemy.’ But I say to you: Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. And pray for those who persecute and slander you. In this way, you shall be sons of your Father, who is in heaven. He causes his sun to rise upon the good and the bad, and he causes it to rain upon the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not even tax collectors behave this way? And if you greet only your brothers, what more have you done? Do not even the pagans behave this way? Therefore, be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Matthew 5:43–48

Closing

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

God of mercy, we begin this day as people you have forgiven. Let that be the ground we walk on. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
