About today

Peter Claver (1580–1654), a Jesuit from Spain, spent decades at Cartagena meeting slave ships. He went into the holds with food, medicine, and baptism, calling himself “slave of the slaves forever.” The United States keeps his obligatory memorial on 9 September, a day of examination for a Church that has lived near that sin. Ask today for a Church that will not look away from those treated as cargo, and for a love willing to go down into the hold.

Lifting up his eyes to his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who are weeping now, for you shall laugh. Blessed shall you be when men will have hated you, and when they will have separated you and reproached you, and thrown out your name as if evil, because of the Son of man. Be glad in that day and exult. For behold, your reward is great in heaven. For these same things their fathers did to the prophets. Yet truly, woe to you who are wealthy, for you have your consolation. Woe to you who are satisfied, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when men will have blessed you. For these same things their fathers did to the false prophets.

When the Son of man will have arrived in his majesty, and all the Angels with him, then he will sit upon the seat of his majesty. And all the nations shall be gathered together before him. And he shall separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he shall station the sheep, indeed, on his right, but the goats on his left. Then the King shall say to those who will be on his right: ‘Come, you blessed of my Father. Possess the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you covered me; sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.’ Then the just will answer him, saying: ‘Lord, when have we seen you hungry, and fed you; thirsty, and given you drink? And when have we seen you a stranger, and taken you in? Or naked, and covered you? Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and visit to you?’ And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’
