Gospel for December 14, 2026.

Verse of the day

About today

John of the Cross (1542–1591), Carmelite reformer with Teresa of Ávila, taught the dark night as a mercy: God weans the soul from what is less than God. Poet and Doctor of the Church, he suffered from his own brothers and would not return injury. His memorial is 14 December, in the last stretch of Advent. Ask today for a love that will go through darkness without bargaining, and for a poverty of spirit that can receive the Word made flesh.

Mass Lectionary · Gospel

Matthew 21:23–27

When he had arrived at the temple, as he was teaching, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the people approached him, saying: “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given this authority to you?” In response, Jesus said to them: “I also will question you with one word: if you tell me this, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John, where was it from? Was it from heaven, or from men?” But they thought within themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we have the crowd to fear, for they all hold John to be a prophet.” And so, they answered Jesus by saying, “We do not know.” So he also said to them: “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Optional memorial Gospel

John 14:6–14

Jesus said to him: “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. If you had known me, certainly you would also have known my Father. And from now on, you shall know him, and you have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, reveal the Father to us, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him: “Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known me? Philip, whoever sees me, also sees the Father. How can you say, ‘Reveal the Father to us?’ Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am speaking to you, I do not speak from myself. But the Father abiding in me, he does these works. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? Or else, believe because of these same works. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me shall also do the works that I do. And greater things than these shall he do, for I go to the Father. And whatever you shall ask the Father in my name, that I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask anything of me in my name, that I will do.
