About today

Charles Borromeo (1538–1584), nephew of a pope, spent himself as Archbishop of Milan on the reform the Council of Trent had asked: seminaries, visitation, catechesis, and care in plague. He lived simply in the midst of high office. His memorial is 4 November. Reform, for him, was not a slogan but a visitation of parishes. Ask today for shepherds who will go into the streets when the city is afraid, and for a reform that begins in the bishop’s own house.

Original – Prayer on Fire.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening

Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Psalm I

Antiphon

I wait for your voice more than watchmen for the dawn.

Psalm 46 (45):2–3, 5–6

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

Psalm

Our God is our refuge and strength, a helper in the tribulations that have greatly overwhelmed us. Because of this, we will not be afraid when the earth will be turbulent and the mountains will be transferred into the heart of the sea. The frenzy of the river rejoices the city of God. The Most High has sanctified his tabernacle. God is in its midst; it will not be shaken. God will assist it in the early morning.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon

I wait for your voice more than watchmen for the dawn.

First Reading

Isaiah 25:6–9

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

And the Lord of hosts will cause all the peoples on this mountain to feast on fatness, to feast on wine, a fatness full of marrow, a purified wine. And he will cast down violently, on this mountain, the face of the chains, with which all peoples had been bound, and the net, with which all nations had been covered. He will violently cast down death forever. And the Lord God will take away the tears from every face, and he will take away the disgrace of his people from the entire earth. For the Lord has spoken it. And they will say in that day: “Behold, this is our God! We have waited for him, and he will save us. This is the Lord! We have endured for him. We will exult and rejoice in his salvation.”

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Closing prayer

Lord Jesus, go with us toward the people we will meet. Let no one leave our presence unblessed. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
