About today

Francis Xavier (1506–1552), companion of Ignatius Loyola, was sent to the East and died in sight of China. He baptized, preached, and wrote home with a missionary urgency that still startles. The Church keeps his memorial on 3 December, in Advent, as a man who could not stay home once he had been sent. Distance did not make the Gospel thinner. Ask today for a heart that will go, and for a Church that does not keep the Gospel as a private language.

Original – Prayer on Fire.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening

Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Psalm I

Antiphon

I wait for your voice more than watchmen for the dawn.

Psalm 19 (18):2–4

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

Psalm

The heavens describe the glory of God, and the firmament announces the work of his hands. Day proclaims the word to day. There are no speeches or conversations, where their voices are not being heard. Their sound has gone forth through all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon

I wait for your voice more than watchmen for the dawn.

First Reading

Isaiah 7:10–14

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

And the Lord spoke further to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign for yourself from the Lord your God, from the depths below, even to the heights above. And Ahaz said, “I will not ask, for I will not tempt the Lord.” And he said: “Then listen, O house of David. Is it such a small thing for you to trouble men, that you must also trouble my God? For this reason, the Lord himself will grant to you a sign. Behold, a virgin will conceive, and she will give birth to a son, and his name will be called Immanuel.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

For our own hearts, that we may receive more than we understand.

R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Closing prayer

Father, send us into the work of this day. Keep our hands honest and our speech kind. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
