About today

When Christmas falls on a weekday, the Sunday within the octave is the feast of the Holy Family. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived the hidden years of obedience, work, and flight. The Church sets this household before every household, not as a plaster model, but as a communion in which the Son of God was subject to Mary and Joseph in Nazareth. Ask today for patience in ordinary rooms, and for a family life that can carry the Word in weakness.

Original – Prayer on Fire.

Saint John, Apostle and Evangelist — Choose how you want to pray this hour:

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening

Lord, open my lips. And my mouth will proclaim your praise.

Psalm I

Antiphon

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us — glory to God in the highest.

Psalm 8:4–6

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

Psalm

For I will behold your heavens, the works of your fingers: the moon and the stars, which you have founded. What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you visit him? You reduced him to a little less than the Angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us — glory to God in the highest.

First Reading

1 John 1:1–4

Catholic Public Domain Version (public domain)

He who was from the beginning, whom we have heard, whom we have seen with our eyes, upon whom we have gazed, and whom our hands have certainly touched: He is the Word of Life. And that Life has been made manifest. And we have seen, and we testify, and we announce to you: the Eternal Life, who was with the Father, and who appeared to us. He whom we have seen and heard, we announce to you, so that you, too, may have fellowship with us, and so that our fellowship may be with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And this we write to you, so that you may rejoice, and so that your joy may be full.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
