Opening

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun Does his successive journeys run; His kingdom spread from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

Isaac Watts (1674–1748); first published 1719. Public domain.

The reading

Pause in the middle of the day. Read slowly, as if someone were speaking to you.

No Gospel is published for this date.

Jeremiah 29:11–14

For I know the thoughts that I think over you, says the Lord: thoughts of peace and not of affliction, so that I may give you patience and an end. And you shall call upon me, and you shall go forth. And you shall pray to me, and I will heed you. You shall seek me. And you will find me, when you have sought me with your whole heart. And I will be found by you, says the Lord. And I will lead you back from your captivity. And I will gather you from all the nations and all the places, to which I have expelled you, says the Lord. And I will return you from the place to which I sent you into captivity.

Reflection

Is there a word or picture you would like to keep with you?

What would you like to tell Jesus?

Silence

Rest here for a minute. Let the reading settle.

Psalm

Psalm 46 (45):2

Ant. When the day is heavy, Jesus, you are the place I can run to.

Our God is our refuge and strength, a helper in the tribulations that have greatly overwhelmed us.

Ant. When the day is heavy, Jesus, you are the place I can run to.

Today’s lesson from Jesus

Do not worry: the birds and the lilies

Consider the birds of the air, how they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much greater value than they are? And which of you, by thinking, is able to add one cubit to his stature? And as for clothing, why are you anxious? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither work nor weave. But I say to you, that not even Solomon, in all his glory, was arrayed like one of these. So if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and cast into the oven tomorrow, how much more will he care for you, O little in faith? Therefore, do not choose to be anxious, saying: ‘What shall we eat, and what shall we drink, and with what shall we be clothed?’

Matthew 6:26–31

Intentions

Add your own personal intentions

  1. Shared by the community

For Mary and Dewey as they prepare for their upcoming wedding, may the Holy Spirit be with them and help grow their love for one another through Holy Matrimony.

    R. Lord, hear our prayer.

  2. Prayer on Fire intention

For those who hunger at midday, and for us who eat — make us just, grateful, and unwilling to hurry past need.

    R. Lord, hear our prayer.

  3. Prayer on Fire intention

In this heat of the day, make us kind to the person in front of us, and faithful in the work we would rather rush.

    R. Lord, hear our prayer.

Closing

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Stay with us in the middle of the day. Do not let hurry be our god. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
