About today

All Souls’ Day follows All Saints as mercy follows glory. The Church prays for the dead, that they may be purified in the love of God and come to the vision of his face. This is not a denial of the Resurrection; it is charity that still has something to do for those we love. The Church does not forget her dead. Ask today for the faithful departed by name if you can, and for a hope that buries the dead as those who will rise.

Original – Prayer on Fire.

And so, the resurrection of the dead came through a man And just as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be brought to life, but each one in his proper order: Christ, as the first-fruits, and next, those who are of Christ, who have believed in his advent. Afterwards is the end, when he will have handed over the kingdom to God the Father, when he will have emptied all principality, and authority, and power. For it is necessary for him to reign, until he has set all his enemies under his feet. Lastly, the enemy called death shall be destroyed. For he has subjected all things under his feet. And although he says,

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Closing prayer

Holy Spirit, seal the Word we have heard. Go with us into the untried hours, and teach us to love as we have been loved. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
