Feast · Saint Stephen, the First Martyr

About today

The day after Christmas the Church keeps Stephen, the first martyr, who saw the heavens opened and prayed for those who stoned him. The octave will not let us separate the crib from the Cross. His feast is 26 December, the first blood after the first night, a deacon’s yes spoken in the street while the Child still sleeps. Ask today for a forgiveness as quick as his, and for a witness that does not wait until the feast is over.

Original – Prayer on Fire.

Verse of the day

Beware of men. For they will hand you over to councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. And you shall be led before both rulers and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

Matthew 10:17–18
